Hi my name is Cristina and I'm going to talk about place in the concept of geography.

Place  is part of the 5 themes  in geography

Location

Place

Region

Movement

Human-Environment Interaction

Place is the phisical and human aspects of a location. This place in geography is associated with toponym (name of the place), site (the description of the features of the place), and situation (the environmental conditions of the place) (1). The landforms, hydrology, biogeography, pedology, etc., of each place in the world are different and are its patterns of human habitation.

The human  characteristics of place are defined by the nature and size of  human population, the cultures and the way of life.

The concept of “place” aids geographers to compare and contrast two places on Earth. For example, it helps to distinguish Antarctica from the Sahara Desert. One is a cold desert while the other is a hot one. While Antarctica has research stations and
penguins, the Sahara has nomadic tribes and camels. Thus, in this way, the “place” theme of geography elaborates a clear picture of a place in the minds of the learners (2).

Physical characteristics include a description such things as the mountains, rivers, beaches, topography, climate, and animal and plant life of a place. If a place is described as hot, sandy, fertile, or forested, these terms all paint a picture of the physical characteristics of the location. A topographical map is one tool used to illustrate the physical characteristics of a location.(3)
